This particular question is difficult in its awkwardness. Ultimately, it’s a simple two-equation, two-unknown question but given the presentation it’s fairly difficult to see what to do with it.
First, we need to figure out how to write out each of the points.
We know the difference between the sales tax actually paid and a 2% sales tax is $27. We can phrase this as follows, where x is the given tax amount and n is the total price:
$\frac{x-2}{100} * n = 27$
Furthermore, we can say that the total amount paid including the x% sales tax is:
$\frac{100+x}{100} * n = 486$
